Konverterfackel
|

Convertor Flare
In order to produce steel, oxygen is blown into the liquid molten iron in a convertor. The oxygen burns the carbon (which would make the steel brittle) in the iron largly to carbon monoxide and a little carbon dioxide.
Carbon monoxide is combustible (it burns to carbon dioxide) and is therefore used within the steel mill as fuel. In the beginning and at the end of the blowing process, the content of carbon monoxide is too low to use the mixture of gas efficiently, so the it is burned in flares like this.
