Up to the world war II, the dry stone walling technique was very used for the consolidations of underground works in the little mechanized french mountain mines.
This slate quarry of Savoie exploited at the beginning of the 20th century a horizontal layer of slate of 4 m of average thickness. The shoring of the rooms of exploitation was realized by stone backfills. This ones re-use the unmarketable extracted stones, and are contained by stone walls of well-kept construction, reinforced by some wooden beams.
