San Jose colliery. Turon valley; Asturias - Northern Spain
This colliery was decommissioned in the late 80s. A pump remains in service to avoid floodings. The buildings are from the 50s.
This valley had a handfull of collieries and mountain mines in service for almost 100 years, the last colliery was shut down in december 2007. More than 1000 people died into the pits of this valley at work after those 100 years of activity, the name of every single one is written on a plate on a wall within a short walk away of this colliery. The 1934 revolution of the miners and steel workers in Asturias previous to the spanish civil war was specially tough at this site.
Efforts are being made by the population to preserve the industrial heritage as historical landmarks, but at the moment with little success because of the opposition and supportless of the coal company and local executive, more inclined to clean up the land and build new industrial estates.
