Solvay Colliery. Lieres; Asturias - Northern Spain
This pit was decommissioned in 2001.
If I had to draw a short list of things to preserve of demolition in Asturias colliery industry, this colliery with its fine settlement for the workers in belgian style would be within the five first names.
As it was run by Solvay company to supply coal to its chemical factory in Torrelavega, almost 170 km away, all its machinery was made in Charleroi, apart from three huge Ingersoll Rand compressors. That fact is very rare over here since most of the machinery for the winding engines was german, spanish or british in few cases. All that machinery has been scrapped recently together with the auxiliary facilities as the coal washery, workshops, the forge, labs, administrative building, lamp room and changing room. Once again local authorities and the coal company are quiet interested to clean up the land to develop new industrial estates.
