The unique swing aqueduct at Barton-on-Irwell, Manchester, carries the Bridgewater Canal over the Manchester Ship Canal. Completed in 1894 this hydraulically operated structure replaced the old 1756 stone aqueduct over the Mersey and Irwell Navigation when the ship canal was built. The swinging tank weighs 1500 tons.
