Cross(ing) at the river Maas

This is the only remaining cross on the Liège-Roermond waterway (river Maas). From the 15th to the 19th century cargo s.a. coal from the region Liège and bricks from the Maas region were transported by ship. These ships were towed by horses with a line driver. The crosses were situated at places where the towing path changes the bank of the river. The crossing of the river was hazardous. Before the crossing the line driver put some money in the collection box at the cross. The money was used once a year for a sacrifice of the Mass for the drivers which drowned while crossing the river.
