Kraftwerk Karlstein

Karlstein Power Station

When lignite was found in 1882 around Kahl and Karlstein at the Main river, it was mined in open pits. In 1902, the "Zeche Gustav" was founded, which gave work to as much as 2000 people in the 20s and comprised a power plant and a briquette factory. Until 1932, all pits were closed. The power plant was taken over by RWE and converted to a anthracite plant in 1938, to an experimental oil plant in 1963-65 and a gas power plant in 1974. In 2000, the plant was shut down for financial reasons.
The plant is located in the midst of a woods and lake landsacpe - a leftover from the former lignite pits.
